Lips are sensitive, the numbing cream is mandatory not optional. The cream takes 20 to 30 minutes to take effect, then the actual pigment application feels more like a sharp tickle or pressure than pain. The session takes 2 to 3 hours total but the most intense part is about 60 to 90 minutes.

7 to 10 days of crusting and slight swelling, this is normal. Color initially looks intense, then lightens, the final color settles 4 to 6 weeks later. Do not judge the result in the first week. Strict no-water/no-sun/no-cosmetics for 7 to 10 days. The 6 to 8 week touch-up fills any color gaps the body's natural process leaves behind.
